"Em mim tu vivias": uma análise comparada sobre o Duplo no romance "A Metade Sombria", de Stephen King, com o conto "William Wilson", de Edgar Allan Poe

Abstract

The present work aims to update the debate on the Double in literature, through comparative literature studies on two works: the short story “William Wilson” (2011), by Edgar Allan Poe, and the novel “The Dark Half” (2019), by Stephen King, as well as updating the comparative studies on the authors analyzed. We assume as work’s hypothesis that there is an influence of Poe’s writing on King’s narratives, deducing that this factor also occurs in the Doppelgänger theme. In order to verify the hypothesis, we established as specific objectives to verify if there are similarities in the personal life of the writers that lead to their respective writings, and also to debate the Double’s aesthetic from the prism of the mirroring of consciousness and the twin .The paper is based on a qualitative research strategy, of an exploratory nature, through a bibliographic survey on the subject. The focus of the monography is to compare the authors, their lives, and how they approach the Double. For this, the Double theme was developed from the theoretical depth of the authors: Fernandez-Bravo (2000); Otto Rank (2014); Carl F. Keppler (1972); Guilherme Z. Azevedo (2006); Selma de A. Camargo (2020); Juan H. Cecilia (2011); Maristela S. Deves (2020); Lubomir Dolezel (1999); Júlio França (2009); Clémet Rosset (2008); Sigmund Freud (1996); Lenice A. Soares (2019); and Carl Gustav Jung (1996; 2008; 2008). With regard to Comparative Literature, we are based on the theoretical contribution of: Brunel, Pichois, Rousseau (1990); Tânia F. Carvalhal (2006); Jean-Louis Cupers (1988); Figueiredo e Faedrich (2006); Henry H. H. Remak (1994); Ulrich Weisstein (1973); and Sandra Nitrini (2000). At the end of the analysis, it was verified that both authors used the doppelgänger with characteristics already known in the aesthetic, Poe approaching more as a reflection of consciousness and King as a twin, showing that the Double is a theme that transcends times and cultures, being a current issue.
